The Gigatonne Challenge
Support high-performing teams tackling the climate crisis world-wide
The Gigatonne Challenge is a radically decentralised global climate strategy, with a unique focus on equity.
It has the potential for changing the trajectory of the climate crisis in 48-60 months.
We support, train, and fund community-based teams throughout the world.
Our teams start by focusing on composting food waste, diversifying into building zero emissions transport networks, food production, renewable energy (biogas and solar) and afforestation.
We measure and track greenhouse gas reductions for everything we do. Our approach has many other positive benefits including:
- The creation of green jobs for those most needing them
- Community benefits like food donations to vulnerable families
- Directly reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Reducing fossil fuel dependencies (we use cargo bikes and electric vehicles)

We have an active pipeline of at least ten new teams joining every quarter.

In 2023 our goal is to start adding 250 teams per region we work in, starting in India, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa. This will kick off the Take-Off Phase of Gigatonne.
How can you help?
The Gigatonne Challenge allows anyone from individuals to corporations, foundations, and governments to make clear, quantifiable and equitable contributions.
Many of our teams are in the Global South. Our work supports the most vulnerable of communities, through the creation of green jobs and tackling issues like food and energy insecurity.
Our hope is that by supporting teams and engaging with Gigatonne, your own stakeholders join in taking action.
“The climate emergency requires immediate tangible and concrete solutions. The time for rhetoric has passed. It is exciting to see that the Gigatonne Challenge offers us a real opportunity to implement such solutions. If rolled out at scale across the world, we have a chance to shift the needle in reducing emissions and quantify this.”
