Lusaka, Zambia
Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia, is one of the fastest growing cities in Southern Africa. Over the coming decade it will become one of the largest cities in Southern Africa with one of the youngest populations in the world.
Our heroes are a collective of non-profit employees and waste entrepreneurs who believe in the circular economy.
Together with local youth and women they are on a mission to turn food waste into compost, create jobs for the unemployed and a healthier environment in poor high-density communities in Lusaka.
Food security is on the minds of this team.
Once matured, the compost will be filled in sacks and potato seedlings will be planted. Potatoes can be sold after 3 months to earn income. The compost used for growing potatoes can be re-used 3 to 4 times or enriched with new food waste to ensure high quality compost.
The intention is to replicate this prototype in an impoverished peri-urban high density area of Lusaka.
The team has already mobilized local waste collectors, interested community members, and the Community Cooperative they work with, including the local council. The manure produced will be used for urban gardening.
